Chicago Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant training program at ORT Technical Institute prepares you for an entry level position in the medical field with an emphasis on back office clinical procedures. Students will learn to perform routine administrative and support clinical tasks to keep health care delivery settings running smoothly. You will receive instruction about how to greet patients, update and file patient medical records, schedule appointments, and arrange for hospital admission and laboratory services.

Clinical training includes taking medical histories and recording vital signs, working with blood, giving injections, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, and assisting the physician during the examination. An externship at the end of the student’s study puts into practice what the student has learned in a real world setting that often leads to employment.

The students who successfully complete ORT’s Medical Clinical Assistant program can expect to obtain employment in health care institutions, clinics, medical offices or health maintenance organizations. Statistics project a growth rate of over 36% in this field over the next 8 years.

Students must be high school graduates or equivalent, pass the school's entrance exam and be interviewed by the Admissions Department. Class size is limited to one student per computer and appropriate medical equipment is provided. Our average class size is only 12 students because we are committed to small class sizes that increase your learning speed and retention. The Medical Assistant program is taught 5 hours per day, 4 days per week, or 20 hours per week for 35 weeks. The evening classes are taught 4.5 hours per each session four times a week or 18 hours per week 40 weeks.
